THE BEST IN SCOTTISH
FIDDLE MUSIC
FROM AUSTRALIA
Catherine Fraser and Duncan Smith, one of the world's leading
Scottish fiddle and piano duos, will be making their first even
Vermont appearance at The Stone Church in Brattleboro, corner of Main
and Grove Streets, Brattleboro, on August 22nd at 730 pm.
Based in Australia, and with a regular international touring
schedule, Fraser and Smith last played in New England in 2007, to
standing ovations. Since then they have had successful tours to
England, Scotland, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, and released
their fourth CD to critical acclaim.
Since founding the duo in 2001, Fraser and Smith have gained an
international reputation as outstanding concert performers, offering
a unique blend of music both from and inspired by the Scottish
tradition. Known for performances that are emotionally rich and
musically diverse, they take the audience on a memorable journey,
exploring everything from toe-tapping reels to the most haunting of
Gaelic airs, from ancient traditional tunes to contemporary and
original works. Combining elements that are powerful and lyrical,
driving and delicate, exuberant and soothing, reviewers have
commented on their "extraordinary talent and taste."
As a duo, their musical connection is highly evident both in
performance and on their four critically acclaimed recordings,
through their creative blend of traditional, folk, classical, and
world music. Their most recent CD, "Rhymes and Reasons", recorded in
Canada with an all-star cast of guest artists, has been played
frequently on nationally broadcast programs of both classical and
world music. Praised by reviewers in Australia, the USA and Scotland,
it was named as one of FolkWorld Europe's Top 10 recordings of 2009.
In January this year Catherine won the prestigious Golden Fiddle
Award, as Best Solo Fiddler in Australasia. Duncan, a Newton native
now based in Melbourne, is known as a performer and teacher of
Scottish music and dance throughout Australia and New Zealand, and
across North America and the UK.
Catherine and Duncan have been described as "a powerful team" (The
Living Tradition Magazine, UK). Their music has been described as
"hauntingly beautiful (The Canberra Times) and "Superb, clear and
elegant…just how Scottish music should sound" (Music in Scotland
Magazine). New Zealand Folk Magazine wrote, "Catherine and Duncan
played up a storm…showing the technical mastery and emotional depth
which has them in demand around the world."
Tickets to the Brattleboro concert are $10, $8 for seniors, available
at the door only. Children under the age of 12 are free. For further
